Chapter 26

Mom continued to make her every other day visits to the camps for the agency. Each time she came, she was given credit vouchers for her work, so this time, she had brought the smaller truck to pick up some fresh fruit. Last time she had turned in her paperwork, she had been given entirely new paperwork to fill out, this one with the heading “Homeland Security: Knox County Department of Human Services Division: Child Protection Unit.”

“When on earth did we get taken over by the feds?” she’d asked.

The administrator scowled. “You got me. All I know is they now think what we do has something to do with interior terrorism. So you’ll need to move these reports to these forms and resubmit them. If you want, you can use the computer in Beth’s office - she’s out today. She gets migraines a lot now.” Beth was his long time administrative assistant.

Mom redid her reports rapidly, then sent the files home and turned them in here. She took a moment to look at other forms available to her. She saw one for surrendering a child to the state for adoption or harvesting. There were others for taking a child if the parents were known dissidents, terrorists or a danger to the state. She copied and emailed them and some others to herself. Just as she finished, she got a text from Gabriel to meet him at the hospital ASAP. After texting him that she’d be there in twenty minutes, around 2, she went to the administrator’s office.

“Well, I didn’t find too much to complain about. Things seems to be going smoothly. The baby that was signed over to me is growing well.”

“Baby? Oh, yeah, read about that. You might want to know there may be more of those.”

“Why?”

“State has been picking up dissidents: and some of the women in camps are having children. If they are dissidents, they can’t sign them over for adoption. The baby becomes a persona non grata, considered a loss to the war. They can sign to have them harvested for organs, but if they won’t sign, the kids are euthanized. No one wants to adopt a terrorist’s kid. It’s not politically correct or safe nowadays. They can’t go to school, they can’t get work later…they’re non people.”

“But most of these people aren’t really terrorists. They just disagree with the way things are going. When did that become against the law?”

He frowned again. “There’s a lot of weird stuff going on. So far, that one baby has been the only one, but there may be more. Would you be interested in taking them and finding them homes under the table, so to speak? We can’t keep them, we hate killing a healthy child.”

“I thought there was a baby shortage?”

“There is, however, it appears they are finding ways to make folks get pregnant so that may be going away. So now some are expendable. It’s too bad.”

“No one’s expendable. I’ll be glad to locate homes for as many as possible.
